Dads, When Talking About Money Be Careful with the Words You Choose.

Hearing words like "we can't afford it" and "money doesn't grow on trees" is common for children during holidays. Even if it's true there are better ways for parents to express it. Use the better ways and empower your children instead of discouraging them.

Those words come from financial educator Leo Quinn of Ballston Spa, NY. In his recent survey of 1447 Americans he asked respondents to recall phrases they remembered hearing about money from their childhood.

Fully, 82% of people responding to the survey recall negative or no discussions about money while growing up. 75% rate their current financial situation as negative.

Quinn says, "the holidays are a time of year when children are bombarded with their parent's often negative attitudes about money". This negative "MoneyTude" as he calls it, starts in childhood and is passed from generation to generation often with disastrous economic results.

"A childhood filled with 'we are broke', 'money is the root of all evil', 'I haven't got two nickels to rub together', and the like become deep-seated beliefs of the child who will nearly always have money problems throughout life because of it…even if they earn 'a lot of money," according to Quinn's research.

Instead of saying words like "we can't afford it", Quinn suggests the more positive and powerful question "how can we afford it?" "Involve the child in answering this question and you instill in them a sense of control that will benefit them throughout their life.", Quinn says.

Leo Quinn has helped thousands of Americans improve their "MoneyTude" since 1997 with his "How To Own Your Paycheck Again!" seminars, books and website www.LeoQuinn.com
